I call upon the powers combined Jason Howell , Gina Trapani  Ron Richards  together you can give the perfect advice for...DUN DUN DUNNNNN!!!!! (echo effect on) The best possible tablet for older parents for Christmas!!! (echo effect off).

Yes i said the "C" word in September, but i am considering a larg tablet for mom this holiday and shes frankly no spring chicken anymore as her youngest ( not me ) is late 30's. So anyways I could pick if she wanted a 7 or 8 inch tablet, but now that the sceen realestate is getting bigger we are talking some money. On top of the fact that I would never get one myself  so I have done 0 research.  Now that I am starting to research ( see what I did there), I decided to short cut and ask the pros I respect. Thanks for your help with anything you can suggest or call attention to since I am slightly out of my depth here.  I wait with anticipation !!

I really like my Nexus 7 (2013) and my aunt has been using one (on her own accord, no less) for just shy of a year.  That being said, there will probably be an update relatively soon to the Nexus tablet line (probably an 8" or 9" tablet).

Additionally, many people really like the Samsung Galaxy Tabs, but they might be a little pricey.

Good luck.

Matt Lucas The Sony Xperia Z2 was a great tablet back in May, of course Sony just unveiled the Z3 so take from that what you will, but that might mean prices on the Z2 come down from the current $500 price point. And again, if that price is fine, the Z3 gets released end of September, so maybe just go with that one. If she has any Sony TVs, there's good crossplay with the tablet too.

Also check out the Samsung Galaxy Tab S. The Tab Note would be overkill for her I'd guess (and more expensive) but the S sounds like a solid purchase. Haven't reviewed it myself.

I know Jason Howell has already given his answer, but while you wait for Gina and Ron to chip in I thought I'd add some perspective from someone who deals with two older folks and tablets. That would be an 82 and 87 year old dad and uncle.

The 7" Nexus is too small for their eyesight. My dad complains he can't read it or manipulate the icons. He's used to a 15" & 17" laptop for heavy reading. He and the uncle also have 4.5" smartphones so they can do some small reading.

You'll want to go with an 8" or better. My dad prefers borrowing my Note 8 because what his fingers are too fat for the stylus makes easy.

I'm in the market for a 10" or better tablet for him as a travel laptop device. I'm really liking the looks of the Samsung Pro 12.2" with bluetooth keyboard. Cost and the impending Nexus tablet releases has me holding on it.

One plus for the Samsungs is they all have built in IR blasters and can control the TV. The What's On app turns their tablets into easy to use remote controls. That's a plus for older folks who are usually TV watchers.

Another drive-by freebie, both my old guys are loving the Tune-In Radio app. If your mom is a radio listener this is a great app to turn her tablet into a portable radio too. My uncle and dad listen to NPR-like stuff, public radio stations across the country and music shows for the older generation. Since I deal with guys I also make sure I install the sports apps they love: MLB, ESPN Score center, NFL Mobile (NFL Rewind is a huge hit amongst the guys in my family for that Monday morning quarterbacking). The grandma's I know want their Facebook and similar apps to keep tabs on the grandkids. Is so easy for us busy younger folks to forget how the older generation can feel left out. Letting them virtually stalk keeps them in the loop. And don't forget the video conferencing a0ps (Skype, Hangouts, etc).
