G+_Jeff Brand
YAQQ (Yet Another Quadcopter Question): Short of FAA banning all quads outright, I plan to get a Syma X5C in the spring as a way to test my interest in a bigger investment. Though it's RTF, I'm wondering what mods are available for this quad that could help me scratch the tuning itch. Any parts that could be reused for a proper build would be a plus! You've already discussed battery upgrades and the wifi range hack. Here are some of my ideas: 1. Frame swap - remounting electronics/motors to a lighter frame. What sorts of weight savings can be made here? 2. Motor upgrades, http://micro-motor-warehouse.com/collections/parts-for-rtf-models/syma-x5c I have a feeling that's about the limit but I'd like opinions. Thanks! G+_Rob Yesta
The Syma and most "toy" prebuilt commercial box quadcopters are not made to have much for interchangeable parts. The circuit board is a combo board with receiver, flight controller ESC, and power distribution. Most mods are just changing camera, paint, removing plastic parts for weight. The Syma motors would not be a good investment for a custom built quad. They tend to burn out and don't have the power. I would say the $50 investment is good for training people to fly without the worry of destroying the custom build quad and much safer if you screw up and hit a person by accident when flying. I wound save the money on motor upgrades to the Syma and start with Hobbyking FPV250 kit.
G+_Jeff Brand
I'm sure there are more things to tune here before making the jump to spending $200 (remote, charger, misc.) As you said, the motors burn out.. I'm thinking mainly of weight or power efficiency savings. Somewhat related, I'm amazed at what's offered at the micro-motor-warehouse.com site for micro quads. The videos posted by the site owner are pretty fun. http://vimeo.com/78404514
