G+_Jeff Brand
#warningquadcopters ... Regarding the No Fly map cited in episode 138 (and originally posted by Ed Lazarus via https://plus.google.com/+EdLazarus/posts/dppzEh5h4v4), the map is an OK resource but not definitive. 1. Not all airports 5-mile radii are no-fly zones. Small airports require contact/coordination with the tower. Cranes operated in the area need to do the same. 2. Not all airports are listed. See the GitHub repo used for feedback on the map. It's unclear if any of the feedback has been taken into account. When calling the tower, they likely won't know what to do about quadcopters specifically. Be prepared with your launch site's altitude above sea level and flight ceiling. (< 400ft of course.) This will factor in to their response. I also wanted to clarify Fr. Robert Ballecer, SJ 's point about parks as no-fly zones. It's not "all parks" but "all federal parks" (http://home.nps.gov/news/release.htm?id=1601) ... so far. Other current, temporary no-fly zones can be found here http://www.modelaircraft.org/membership/clubs/notams.aspx. http://www.modelaircraft.org/membership/clubs/notams.aspx
