Hi All : just thought I'd share this. (I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one with a pile CD/DVD's that are waiting for proper disposal.)

How To quickly damage disc media prior to trash disposal (#DataDestruction)

Over the years, I've been accumulation of number of discs (CD, DVD, and recently BD/BluRay) that I no longer need but have been reluctant to tossing directly into the trash/recycle bin due to concerns of data security from dumpster divers. I've tried snapping discs in half by hand, but don't want to risk slashing my hand open (no stiches please). I've tried scratching discs into obliteration by rubbing a disc between my shoe and rough concrete, but this is time consuming.

After recently working on a bathroom remodling project, the idea of using a center punch on a disc came to mind. In this case, I used a phillips screwdriver, a large-sized socket (5/8ths in my case) and a hammer. Put the disc on the socket, place the tip of of the screwdriver on the disc (over the socket) near the inner track (where the data writes tend to start) then whap with the hammer. (REMEMBER: safety glasses!!)

Depending upon the materials that the disc was made from, different outcomes from the punch may occur. I noticed that DVDs (2004 to present) would partially shatter, chunck and/or delamenate. (In some cases, I could pry the screwdriver to completely delam the disc layers completely apart.) On some really old CDs (late 90's era), the screwdriver would just pierce the disc, but would leave an exit-crater that would prevent the disc from mounting in a disc drive.

In my first run, I was able to "destroy" 25 discs in about 10 minutes.

Happy with the results, the plastic remains were tossed into the recycle bin.?
