What's the similarity between the Galaxy S4, HTC One, HTC One Mini, Moto X, and Sony Xperia Z Ultra?

Well, for one, they are all high profile devices that people get excited about.

There is another interesting similarity between those devices though:

None of them runs on NVIDIA's chips.

In the following article, I attempt to explain why I'm worried about NVIDIA's current effort in the mobile space.

What do you think?

Are you worried as well or do you think I'm just being paranoid?

People run so hot and cold on Nvidia that it is confusing.  I think there is some holdover from ATI v Nvidia in the PC space so haters just move over to the phone space.  But in regards to your column, I am not worried.  This is the space they have decided to occupy.  The Tegra 4 is made for tablets and the Tegra 4i is made for low cost handsets.  By design they won't get any high profile phone design wins this year.  Perhaps that is the mistake, but with the massive China and India markets looking for low cost, decently performing phones, the Tegra 4i could be a big success.  It will probably sell poorly in the USA, but that probably doesn't matter.

Launch date is a problem, but we're in the null moment where they don't have anything new out.  Of course they will look weak right now!  Still, I agree that I would like to see more Tegra 4 tablets.  Perhaps Shield will convince more folks of the platforms validity, or demonstrate its weaknesses.  Only a few more days until that launch.

Evan Sweeney I agree the tegra 4i looks like a great option for lower cost handsets.

However that's gonna be down to hours low NVIDIA is willing to sell it. Because the low end space in the developing markets currently have its own version of Snapdragon, courtesy of Mediatek. Their quad core chip is every where in the upper low end right now.

It's powerful enough to provide a smooth experience with 1080p screens, and cheap enough for some manufacturers to equip their sub $300 phones (off contact, that's conducted upper low end price level in places like India and Indonesia) with 5 inch 1080p IPS displays.

Another benefit that the Mediatek chip offers is support for dual SIM cards which is seen as a serious advantage in the developing markets.

It would be interesting to see if NVIDIA can compete with Mediatek's offering. ?
