I have a 256GB thumb drive that has now failed to be recognized in Windows 10

Yeah, that doesn't sound very good. Do you have that data other places? If Storage Management is able to see the disk and its size, perhaps the partition tables just got messed up? Spinrite might be able to help with that, but other data recovery tools could probably restore that partition table - if that's the problem.

The tool I used forever ago was "Get Data Back" and there was an NTFS and FAT version. That was a long time ago and I probably got it from a "friend". Easeus makes a free tool that they claim will do the job, but I have no experience with it. Problem with Flash media is once it's overwritten, it's gone. At least in your case the data probably wasn't overwritten and may still be accessible. http://www.easeus.com/resource/drive/usb-flash-drive.htm

Good luck!
