G+_Steve Labbe
I have a 256GB thumb drive that has now failed to be recognized in Windows 10. Once inserted, I receive the double low tone. Any ideas to trouble shoot or fix? Any help is appreciated!
G+_Dan Hockey
Find someone running osx or some form of linux and run lsusb, if it shows up with that command then the problem may be with windows. If it doesn't then you drive may be dead. What make of flash drive is it?
G+_Steve Labbe
PNY, I ran a DOS Boot Disk with Spinrite and that did not recognize the drive. My fear was death as well, this is a bit of last resort :)
G+_Ben Reese
Does it appear in Device Manager? Either as an unrecognized "other" device or as a Disk Drive?
G+_Steve Labbe
It does not appear in device manager, not as a unassigned storage device. Its as if the device controller chip just failed from an working device in the morning to nothing in the afternoon.
G+_Ben Reese
Yeah, that's weird... Did you try it on a different device? Or try another USB port? Sounds like it might just be dead.
G+_Steve Labbe
Ben, I have tried multiple computers and my fear is getting realized lol.
G+_Steve Labbe
Just inserted in my work computer (cause why not) it shows up as disk 1 in storage management but identifies Removable (E:) no media
G+_Ben Reese
Yeah, that doesn't sound very good. Do you have that data other places? If Storage Management is able to see the disk and its size, perhaps the partition tables just got messed up? Spinrite might be able to help with that, but other data recovery tools could probably restore that partition table - if that's the problem. G+_Ben Reese
I haven't recently used any data recovery tools to recommend and really my experience recovering from flash media hasn't shown much success.
G+_Steve Labbe
Not a recent backup (about 2 weeks old) so those two weeks are the ones I am trying to get. Otherwise, it really is an exercise in "can I do this"
G+_Ben Reese
The tool I used forever ago was "Get Data Back" and there was an NTFS and FAT version. That was a long time ago and I probably got it from a "friend". Easeus makes a free tool that they claim will do the job, but I have no experience with it. Problem with Flash media is once it's overwritten, it's gone. At least in your case the data probably wasn't overwritten and may still be accessible. http://www.easeus.com/resource/drive/usb-flash-drive.htm Good luck! G+_Ben Reese
Fun story... I sat next to a girl in Networks 101 who brought in an SD card in 2 pieces and asked if I could fix it. I asked what happened... She bit it in two. Sorry, girl! I can't fix that!
