G+_Ben Reese
What are your plans for each? Will your Linux server and NAS be the same machine or two separate machines? I'm running Xpenology (open sourced Synology NAS) and it will run VMs. I've got 2 VMs running currently on 10 year old Intel CPU and 8 GB RAM. Any popular Linux distro can function as a NAS though. G+_Travis Hershberger
I prefer Fedora myself. Used to go CentOS, but CentOS and RedHat use packages that are so old that they are slow and tend to break things in odd ways. Also, KVM is really easy with virt-manager and available on any distribution you use. Makes for a great VM server base.
G+_John D. Hawkins
How does a Linux server serve to a Windows network? Sorry to high jack this post but I’ve had a server for a couple years now running Fedora but I’ve never done anything past installing the distro and updating it. G+_Ben Reese
John D. Hawkins it seems relevant to the discussion. Samba will provide a SMB/CIFS/Windows share. Installation and setup may be different depending on the distro and I'm not real familiar with Fedora, so here's what I found on a quick Google search: https://www.hiroom2.com/2017/08/02/fedora-26-samba-en/ I'm sure Travis Hershberger or someone else more familiar with Fedora could give better advice. G+_Travis Hershberger
Ben Reese That looks like a good article on the basics. If you want to get really fancy you can setup an AD server using SAMBA now as well. To be honest tho, I normally spin up a nethserver.org - NethServer when I want an AD server. The AD server is then managed from a workstation via RSAT.

G+_Ben Reese
I can't really recommend Xpenology for AMD systems. It works, but not as well as it does on Intel hardware.
