G+_T Burns
I think this was discussed before, but I can't find/remember. Any suggestions on a network monitor that can capture how much data each device on a network is using, without having to install it on all devices? I know there is an app that I can download for PC's but I want to monitor all devices, including Roku's and Chromecasts on the network from one location. I have a Netgear WNDR3800 router, 3 computers, 1 roku, 2 chromecasts, 2 iPhones and an iPad.
G+_Fr. Robert Ballecer, SJ
Either a ITUS Guardian or just make something with a hub and Wireshark
G+_Jason Marsh
Fr. Robert Ballecer, SJ I think the answer is FLOSS firmware on a higher-end router.
G+_Eddie Foy
ITUS Shield, I guess, IF you can get one. Still waiting for my KickStarter shipment.
G+_Paul Galati
If you are looking for something to monitor between LAN and WAN, the Tomato open source firmware on a supported router can do that nicely. Not sure why Padre never mentions Tomato. It always seems to be DD-WRT and always way out of date.
G+_Eddie Foy
Tomato doesn't nearly support as many devices. (which could be a good thing! DD-WRT feature list/level varies by device) Opn-WRT is the third alternative But if the FCC has its way, no more 3rd party router software. G+_Fr. Robert Ballecer, SJ
The FCC isn't trying to outlaw 3rd party firmware. They're trying to outlaw 3rd party firmware that allows the user to jack up the power on their radios past legal levels. I wholeheartedly support that. Will explain on the next KH. G+_Eddie Foy
So 2 firmwares in the router? One for radio one for OS? You know the MFGs will take the cheap route and just block/lock it all.
G+_Eddie Foy
Also whats the point to limiting output power if you can just hook up a WiFi amp and high gain antenna and still be WAY over the legal limit? Also being a HAM I am allowed mo' powar, so why limit me?
