I'm splitting this from my other question earlier - can an Raspberry Pi 3 handle OTA DVR? Does it have the muscle to record compressed video? If so, what formats?

I thought the Raspberry Pi had a separate MP4 encoder/decoder chip. On the OG Pi B you could buy a license to use it for another $5 or something. The real question is whether or not the transcoding software will utilize the graphics chip.

 

I think OTA (in the US at least) is natively mpeg2.
