G+_Lance Pelissier
Read 1st This is what I heard form Western Digital. Green , Black, and Blue Drives are only for useful for data Wille Back and Blue are better for the OS and Apps. Red and Purple Drives Are not diseded to work one their own. The real def bewine Red and Purple is Purple uses AllFrame technology with based On what hraed is only useful in security systems.
G+_Travis Hershberger
Purple drives are meant to be used as video storage, that much is correct. I've not come across a reason to get purple for a storage array as of yet, but they should be able to deliver better streaming reads/writes than Green, Blue, Black, or Red. What they actually deliver who knows. An example I already know are Red drives. These are just Green's with a bit flipped in the drive's BIOS (yes, it's been proven, no I don't recommend anyone try turning a Green into a Red. Unless you don't care about your warranty, then have at it!) That bit turns on TLER (Time Limited Error Recovery), that makes them work much better in a RAID array. As in, they won't take forever trying to recover a sector that the RAID array is going to fix anyway and DROP from the array. Yep, without TLER turned on, drives will randomly drop from a RAID array for no discernible reason!
G+_Ben Reese
And are Blue discontinued for normal use? I think the largest Blue I've seen was 500 GB or something.
G+_Travis Hershberger
Ben Reese You should be able to find them still. Blue's are still the "buy this if you don't know what you need" models, average performance and a decent price. They may be hard to find when looking online for only the lowest cost models (non of which I'd trust with my data.)
G+_Timothy Hamlett
Ben Reese nope, I have an unused 1 tb Blue sitting on my desk right now. I generally use Blues for everything EXCEPT Green for systems where I know they don't need HD performance and Blacks for high performance systems.
