G+_T Nohands
Ah you ask a question that people make a lot of money unfortunately with all media if it's not already digital then it has to be scanned and processed through a media editor it's worth buying a digital copy for best results, yet to answer your question the best method is to get it on a machine to thoroughly capture as much data as possible. A standard vhs dvd recorder can be found at amazon ebay etc... Now to get the best results you'll need a high grade media capture card for a PC desktop style machine. So if you have a real computer that has a or some pci express slots on the board you could combine a media capture card with some video graphics card to capture and then go through the process of rendering the data with video and audio editing programs and sorry to say the cost of the software isn't the only step. If I went in to the full process I would be revealing how to get the media off of a dvr like Directv It's the time that will drive normal people nuts. the data can only be capture in less than real time. Some will tell you a single pass capture will be good enough for these programs to use for the full restoration rendering process. If you want to do a single pass and would be happy with that then opensource freeware software will be better than the vhs dvd copying machine. For the full capture you'll need to capture your media in layers and multiple passes if you are looking for media you made and own you can message me and if you have the hardware I'll give you a link to get a full Adobe CS2 and lessons via links that will let you completely digitize every bit of data then clean up and have a digital version which is a long process. Now if you don't own the media on the vhs it's better to just buy a dvd and rip it for personal media server and vlc with handbrake 2 free software to archive regular dvd's. Now I will say this much about capture and render with a capture card and high end graphic cards can be used to capture in layers the KEY word is CAPTURE not record a streaming input is a fun hak to do when it comes to the Free Use Act it is legal to record or capture media as long as it's not encrypted. That would be open broadcast on airwaves such as Local radio and TV channels Only and content you've purchased with all legal rights. I now give Fr. Robert Ballecer, SJ his chance for legal disclaimer Insert here ( ) ok assuming you have the hardware there is a law that says all media devices with a firewire or ethernet port on it must be active there are some drivers you can use to play media through your hardware sorry guys I'm not posting links or exact drivers needed out of respect for TWiT.tv and for Fr. Robert Ballecer, SJ afterall it's his community so I'll show respect and not take it too far. :( So getting access or playing media is half the problem, Encryption is the other half. When media is transmitted movies like on HBO its got a little code transmitted with it that says how many times it can be recorded. So not likely an issue for vhs but now most media except for am frequencies and ham radio channels which can carry video and digital media simply because digital and analog are not used properly anymore a good subject for know how Fr. Robert Ballecer, SJ in fact a lot f vhs are actually digital encoding for sound. So once a digital signal is attached it could be encoded with the copy once or copy twice tag so that's for recording not capture so the trick is to capture image and sounds split up in different encoding like mp4 aac mp3 and so on.. then strip out any all tags then rerender the media that can take days to do and that's why "archivists" try to do this fo the industries get payed big buck, which brings me to the end and my advice there are archivists that will do the job for you, so for best quality just send it off no headaches and hours working on it with software meant to create and not dissect and reassemble but can if the vhs means something to you let a professional do it right for you they can remove wind traffic sounds adjust tint brightness and even remove your mother in law if you want them to ( I think they charge extra for that maybe some sympathize and do it for free) anyways you can dup, record, or capture are your options shop around and see which is best for you also check out AVS forums that's Scott Wilkinson's forum they would have more precise and a more subject direct forum/community. See Fr. Robert Ballecer, SJ I have restrained my posting to be more legal friendly towards twit and know how, and all this would be a good know how episode.
