G+_Joel G. J
Anybody have any recommendations for replacement Micro-USB charging cables? Looking to replace a few that are falling apart. Do they need to be 28/24AWG for the best charging? Fr. Robert Ballecer, SJ : any suggestions?
G+_Ben Tyger
I buy almost all of my cable from cables2go. They have lots of selection. I love that I could get a 6' micro-USB with a left handed angle connector. So when I hold it while in bed the tail hangs in the proper direction and has enough length to stay plugged in. G+_Russ White
I use the ones made by Mediabridge. They're heavy guage, fit very snug and can handle high amp charging. http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=bl_sr_pc?ie=UTF8&field-brandtextbin=Mediabridge&node=541966
G+_Tom Apalenek
I'll 2nd the Monoprice recommendation. They have a large selection, cheap prices and the quality is generally pretty good. I'm lucky enough to live about 4 miles from their warehouse and will-call pickup location. I can order just about anything from their web site in the morning and pick it up that afternoon. G+_Joel G. J
Any specific Monoprice models recommended?
G+_Tom Apalenek
Just go to the Monoprice site and type "USB micro charge sync" in the keyword search box. It will pop up 3ft and 6ft cables in both black and white that should work fine for you.
G+_Ben Reese
Joel J that kinda depends on the phone that you have. They've got some cheap ones (like 89¢ or something) which work great but the Micro USB side wears out and doesn't make good contact with phones. In my experience they still work ok for HTC phones after that, but Samsung phones get pretty finicky. They're a bit thinner wire, but I go for the slightly more expensive ($2 I think) "Premium" cables. You have to be careful with them because when they bend on the end, the wire underneath can become exposed. The plus side to the premium cables is that their connectors stay firmly connected in all phones (that I've tried) even after a year or so. Monoprice cables are definitely cheaper quality, but they have a lifetime warranty and they're inexpensive enough to buy in bulk and hand out to all your friends. G+_Ben Reese
If you go with the premium cords, you can use the spring out of a pen for a strain relief keeping the insulation from separating from the end. I can post a pic of one that I fixed up.
G+_Ben Reese
Oh, and to your question about wire gage... I haven't noticed much difference in charging speed among all the different cables. Theoretically the 24AWG would let more current through, but wire length will probably have a bigger impact than gage.
G+_Ben Reese
And here's the promised picture of the partially fixed wire: https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/Z9E4f9wu5S8NSZiTgjzZpNMTjNZETYmyPJy0liipFm0?feat=directlink

G+_Ben Reese
Oh, well awesome! Thanks for the heads up... I'll have to fix that.
G+_Ben Reese
Hmmm... Are you seeing over 10k photos or just 30ish? There are a few photos that I've shared publicly so I could post them to FB hoping I could entice more of my friends/family to come to the dark side :-)
G+_Marc T Zicari
I saw around 30ish. BTW - I didn't see the USB fix.
G+_Joshua Hamlett
I use Amazon Basics for a lot of my cable replacements, as its always a good quality at a low price. I just bought this for my phone a couple months ago and haven't had any problems. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00C28L6EW/
G+_Ben Reese
Here's the last couple monoprice cables I bought... http://www.monoprice.com/Product?p_id=9761 Aside from the eventual separating mentioned above, these work very well. I've been using this in my car almost daily for about 3 months ago and haven't needed to add my spring thing yet.
