G+_Joel G. J
HI again. I just really like the community driven answers to my many questions. Now, I want to talk about DNS Fr. Robert Ballecer, SJ : In a segment you broadcasted on DNS, you showed an easy way to speed up your internet. HOWEVER, i heard reports that ISP's could charge you for not using the ISP provided DNS addresses. Is this true or is this a scare tactic? Really like the show. Thx for all the knowledge spewing from your knowledge hole.
G+_Fr. Robert Ballecer, SJ
That sounds like pure scare tactic. Whether provided by your ISP's DNS or a 3rd-party DNS, the IP address of the server you're trying to reach would be the same. Fear the Knowledge Hole. :)
G+_Joel G. J
Should you change the IPv6 addresses as well. or would that be overkill? Also, any specific caveats to DNS switching...
G+_Travis Hershberger
Joel J Caveats to switching your DNS is all about how fast the servers respond to requests. Grc (Steve Gibson, from Security Now) has a utility to test IPv4 DNS server speeds. Add your isp DNS to the list and have a go. https://www.grc.com/dns/benchmark.htm
G+_Luke Militello
Fr. Robert Ballecer, SJ, perhaps a show on running ones own resolver? I'm not talking about your own domain, even though it opens the door for that, but just a simple DNS server that allows for recursion for one's own network. Use that for the primary and use a third party server for the secondary/redundancy. Very simple to do with BIND in Linux. :)
