Lulzbot just released their build of Cura as well which is optimized for the TAZ 4 and the new Lulzbot Mini

The goto that most end up with though if their printer supports it is Simplify3d.

Personally I use Cura for my Ultimaker 2 and TAZ 4.  I use Simplify3d for the Flashforge Creator Pro.

Simplify3d is great but while it offers multiple profiles it doesn't attach firmware settings to those profiles.  Mine stays in makerbot mode to produce the correct files for the Creator Pro.  It's a pain to switch back and forth so I just leave it there.

The only complaint I have about Slic3r is that it's so slow and I've had prints it just wouldn't work for.  I went to Simplify3d which improved print quality quite a bit on my original TAZ 1 even though it wasn't officially supported.  I was building repraps before that.  Slic3r isn't the most polished GUI wise.  I stick with open source printers because it gives me the flexibility to use the software that works for me.  I can understand why a newcomer would consider Slic3r janky and possibly intimidating though.
