Fr. Robert Ballecer, SJ : My Router is a Netgear WNR3500L that supports 802.11 N. When trying to check for new Firmware on the manufacturer's website, it seems to have not been updated in many years. I found this site when i was looking for Alternative Firmware: http://www.myopenrouter.com/

 

TLDR: Should I trust this site with newer firmware downloads.

Looks like they've been around a little while, but they don't appear to be associated with Netgear. Try whois or a search on wikipedia. I have no idea what firmwares they're extolling the virtues of, but I prefer to go straight to the source for such downloads (dd-wrt, openwrt, etc.)

Yeah, what Jason said.  Stick with the 3 , DD-Wrt, Tomato, and OpenWRT if going 3rd party.  You can also check https://www.exploit-db.com/ and see if any exploits or known vulnerabilities exist for your router.  (I don't see a direct exploit in metaploit, but possibly some secondaries)

I see open-source/aftermarket firmware availability depends on hardware version; which version is yours?

Well, you can put DD-WRT on it, but I'm not seeing anything for that model from the other projects.
