G+_Joel G. J
Fr. Robert Ballecer, SJ Bryan Burnett With your last episode of KH released being about laptops, I have a laptop question. I know that a significant amount of Linux users (e.g. Aaron Newcomb, Darren Kitchen) use old laptops. Any suggestions?
G+_Benjamin Webb
Well I usually get 2'nd hand business notebook dells. I usually just aim for a generation or two old and put a SSD in it. Not the most stylish thing but they are reliable and cheap. Businesses sell off their old equipment cheap all the time.
G+_Black Merc
Pawn shop deals, older h/w can be had for a song... slick off the main drive or replace with ssd. Older h/w drivers are probably written and tested... newer h/w probably now.
G+_Dan Hockey
Ubuntu mate or Ubuntu lxde for an older computer with less 2gb ram. Although I run Ubuntu 14.04 on a 2006 Dell netbook dual core atom with 2gb ram, it works just fine for basic internet and email. It will do youtube as long I'm not running anything else. G+_Ben Reese
You in the US? I've checked Craigslist for laptops a few times and have seen a good selection of business Lenovo and Dell laptops. What I've seen run $200~$300 for a 15" with 2nd or 3rd Gen i5 and 4GB RAM. As Benjamin Webb? said, they're not stylish but throw in an SSD and you'll have a good machine. I've got one I use at church recording audio, controlling the DMX lighting, running PowerPoint slides, and streaming the service to YouTube.
