I hear that torrents are meant to download files faster from the web

Torrents are typically faster because you have multiple sources to download from. You're still limited by the seeders' upstream bandwidth though and if they have any caps set on their sharing speed. You may also be limited by your own download speed.

 

I've been using qBittorent lately which has worked pretty good. Downloaded Mint in just a few minutes a couple days ago.

Yes, bare in mind that the primary goal of Torrent is not speed, but to spread the downloading accross several different sources. This means each source can provide a small amount of bandwidth and the total might be faster.

 

However, if there are no good seeds and/or if very few people are sharing the file then the speeds can be very slow. If the file is very popular, then speeds should be as good as a very fast download provider. The speeds can never exceed your own bandwidth limits, of course.
