G+_Joel G. J
#Feedback #BacktoSchool Fr. Robert Ballecer, SJ Bryan Burnett Please do a segment on External storage. I am a college student in a tech degree field and I seem to be addicted to buying flash drives. Mostly for checking out Linux distros without the lag of a Virtual Machine and for the storage of large files. I'm thinking about getting an external hard drive for some of the ISO's I download and it is not easy to download them often. Also, this could futureproof me when I purchase a laptop in the future since a lot of SSD storage would cost more $$$. Any recommendations for the students out there? IS there any possibility of a decently priced external hard drive with a replaceable drive? Thanks for the awesome show! Keep it up
G+_Ben Reese
I'd assume most external drives actually have replaceable storage inside them. Beyond that, it just depends on your budget and how much storage you think you'll need. Something like the Drobo will give great performance and lots of storage, but at a high price. Western Digital makes good HDDs and their 1 to 3 TB external drives are pretty affordable ($60-$115 on Amazon). Of course, HDDs aren't as fast as SSDs though. Probably good for storing large downloads, but not as good for running the OS from. Maybe the best option would be an SSD upgrade kit. The Kingston I got a while back came with a 120 or 240 GB SSD and an external enclosure to house the new or old drive. Mine is USB 2.0, but I'm sure there are kits with 3.0 enclosures. And if modularity is most important, it looks like there are USB 3.0 enclosures on Amazon that will hold any laptop drive and cost about $10+
