G+_Joel G. J
Hey there Fr. Robert Ballecer, SJ? , Want an updated answer to a question I asked in the past. Want to get a device that can easily display PDFs and other book files. I do not want to be stuck in an Ecosystem and want to load books I saved from other sources such as Project Gutenberg. Hopefully a budget device. Willing to buy used/refurbished.
G+_MicroHex
Any Android tablet can sideload APK files (android app installer files) after you enable that feature in the Security settings. So you aren't trapped to Google's app store. Alternatively, there are still quite a few ~$100 tablets with Atom processors being made in China that run Windows 10. They aren't bad at all (although I would suggest backing up the drive, backing up the drivers, and using a fresh Windows install disk to wipe out any weirdness that may have been added to the default Windows install). G+_Peter Hanse
A Amazon kindle should be able to handle PDF and e-book format.
G+_Jeff Gros
I've got a Lenovo Tab2 A10 that I bought a few years back. I only use it for browsing internet and PDFs. Works great. Does fine with netflix and video, although I don't do that much. No problems with the wifi (2.4 and 5). I've never tried camera. I've never tried games. This tablet is for reading in my rocking chair with a hot cup of tea. Its large enough to read, but not too large to hold or too heavy. When I bought mine two years ago from best buy it was on sale for $200 including tax. My sister bought one from Walmart last December for less than $150. Refurb is also an option because its a few years old now. As mentioned above any Android tablet will do and will be relatively inexpensive. Recommended App list below for Android: For PDFs I've got the ezPDFReader PRO ($4), which I found recommended when I did searching on best PDF readers. Swipes left to right to flip pages, is easy to navigate, has clickable links, has clickable table of contents, has search, has bookmarks, has a night mode and a whole bunch of editing features I will never use. Works great for books, datasheets, whatever. I have yet to find a pdf it won't open. For chm files I have SuperChm Pro (cannot find on app store?). I also have Excel, Powerpoint and Word (all free). That should cover all the bases for documents. For video I recommend VLC (free). Get ES File Explorer (free) for navigating the file system. I also recommend at least a 128 GB SD card if not a 256 GB. The internal 12 GB is at 62% with pretty much just the OS. My 128 GB card is almost full! Too many documents! :)
