G+_Craig Willetts
Help needed Hi Android people! I am considering changing my old and semi-broken iPhone 4 for an Android phone. I have the iPad Mini now so I am less interested in having a big phablet, since that is becoming my main sofa and bus surfing device. What I do care about: - Size - I would prefer it to be not much bigger than an iPhone 4 - Quality - I have children. Enough said. - Camera - I would prefer the camera to be on par with iPhone 4 - Updated - Preferrably Android 4.1 so I can play with Google Now - NFC is a bonus I would love to play around with My operator is offering me some subsidized phones. The most interesting are: - Samsung Galaxy S3 - too big? - Samsung Galaxy S3 Mini - Sony Xperia S - HTC Desire X What do you think I should do? The S3 Mini? Wait for something better to come around? Or accept the fact that I'm old and just get another iPhone? :-)
G+_Gustavo Bittencourt
If you don't mind not having LTE, you should consider the Nexus 4.
G+_Magnus Akselvoll
LTE is not important. I live in Spain and the network I use does not support it. The Nexus 4 is impossible to buy though, isn't it?
G+_Ricky Cash
The tiny Android phones probably don't match up with the iPhone, while the big phones are superior. So if you want to stay tiny stay iPhone.
G+_Magnus Akselvoll
Since when is a four inch screen "tiny"? :-)
G+_Eng. Jorge Santana
For great pictures look at the Lumias phones, they have the best phone optics IMHO...
G+_Tor Iver Wilhelmsen
Sony has a rugged Xperia model that could fit the bill...
G+_Steve Adams
I have just got a Nexus 4 and it's fantastic & great value. Depending on carriers/deals in your region you may find as I did going for a SIM only deal with a one-time payment for a Nexus 4 easily wins vs an 18 or 24 month contract for a similar spec phone. G+_Ricky Cash
Tiny is relative.
G+_Magnus Akselvoll
First, thanks to all. To all mentioning the Nexus 4: I would if I could. It is always out of stock. Lumia: sure, but I would prefer one with Windows Phone 8. My carrier has none and without the contract they are quite pricy. Rugged Sony: That is actually a good idea. I will look into it, yet I think that the reviews were so so.
G+_Clint M
I agree with Christophe Thomas If your operator is compatible with the Nexus 4, I would go that direction.
G+_Magnus Akselvoll
Clint McCollum, sure, but where do I buy it?
G+_Felix Adewoye
if you are not getting s3 then nexus 4 is your best option
G+_Leonard Chilcoat
Have you used Android before? I switched to iPhone 4 (and now 5) a year and a half ago after 3 or so years using Android. You couldn't pay me to go back to an Android based phone. They may have improved the Android OS since I switched but too little too late for me. Do you own a Mac or AppleTV? I personally like the way Apple products work together but to each their own. Good luck and enjoy whichever new phone you decide on.
G+_Magnus Akselvoll
Not much, Leonard Chilcoat, but as a software developer I like having experience with different systems. I have both Mac and Windows, an iPad or two but no AppleTv.
G+_jeremy abney
S3 is great! I've never owned the nexus 4 but I have heard some complaining about the camera, other then that seems to be great.
G+_Andrew Oliver
If you don't get a Nexus, make sure you get a phone you can root and that has a decent number of custom roms. You really don't want to get stuck on a old version of Android because either the manufacturer or the carrier drag their feet..
G+_Christian Reichert
S3 mini maybe?
G+_Magnus Akselvoll
Christian Reichert, yes, it seems the S3 mini might be the best choice. I am a bit afraid that that is a very mid (low) range phone, though. After all, I am spoiled after years on iPhones :-)
G+_thomas skareteg
Yea, The s3 is a very good high end phone. and you will probably get used to the size very fast. s3 mini is a bit on the mid range
G+_Christian Reichert
Yes - the S3 mini is more a spec bumped up Version of the Samsung Ace than it is a smaller S3. Even the internal model numbers show that. Nevertheless that might still be gold enough. As for the Sitze. I moved from the iPhone 4s to the normal S3 - strange for about a week, but since then the iPhone now feels strangely small. Would never want to go back. BTW ... nowadays I even have the Note2 and really like that.
G+_Magnus Akselvoll
Whatever is announced at MWC won't be directly available I presume, Jason Sandry. And I am looking to deemphasize my phone anyways, so I am not interested in the flagships (large and expensive). I'm almost certainly getting the s3 mini. G+_Christian Reichert
Magnus - interesting that you say 'demphsize' your Phone. I started playing around with an old xperia Go (with CM9)... To use while I run, do Calls & listen do Podcasts. For everthing else my Nexus 7 & Laptop .... Started to do some clever stuff with tasker then ... Only just started so Jury's still out if that Combo shows good.
