G+_610GARAGE
So I think my network switch is dieing. I'm getting odd disconnects. So I was wondering if you guys had a favorite rack mount switch. It's the main switch in my rack (can I call it my core switch; because that sounds cooler :) ), so I need Qos, and LACP capabilities. I think I need a layer 2 switch. I would like to keep it under $600 (really under $200 but that doesn't seem realistic). Any suggestions? Edit: Forgot to mention that I am looking for a 42 port. G+_Adam EL-Idrissi
610bob? I have this (http://m.newegg.com/Product/index?itemnumber=N82E16833704152). They have versions with less ports. G+_610GARAGE
Adam EL-Idrissi That looks like a pretty good switch. Unfortunately I forgot to mention that I was look for a 42 port. There is a 42 port version at $350. I was also looking on ebay and found a Dell Powerconnect 5548 at $370. So I'm not sure if it is worth going with a used high end switch or go with a new, lower end switch. I do care about latency, but the switch that is failing is a used dell. So I am a bit worried. Adam EL-Idrissi Have you ever hammered the switch. For example, saturate a couple links? Just curious of real world performance.
G+_Adam EL-Idrissi
610bob I haven't setup any linked ports although my freenas box has 5....I'm building a new VM box with some ssd and I have a couple machines with ssd that I haven't used to max out connections to freenas, maybe over the holiday break I'll have time. Doing a transfer from win7 to freenas over one gig port I get about 75-80 for smb shares. Until my lab gets built really the only thing I've set up is vlans.WiFi only, my Pcs, roommates Pcs. I'm sure none of that is helpful but all I've gotten to so far
G+_610GARAGE
Adam EL-Idrissi No, that is helpful. With my dying dell, I get about 70 for smb, so the switch is comparable with file transfer. Unfortunately, I think TP-Link is stopping production of there 48 port switches. Newegg is out of stock and Amazon is only selling used and new from other retailers. I'm going to see if using a 2 24 ports (I have a working unmanaged switch) will result in too much congestion. But I'm thinking I need to go with one of the big name brands, Dell, HP. Adam EL-Idrissi Thanks for your help and have a great Thanksgiving or whatever holiday you are celebrating. G+_Adam EL-Idrissi
610bob I wish network transfers would be like ssd to ssd,550. Haha. I'm looking at another switched, unmanaged, but not to link. When I got this 24 port from amazon I found out its v1 instead if version 2.same specs but still.haha. I was looking at dlink and netgear. These use netgear at work and I see a lot of positive online. Happy thanks giving to you too. I participate thanksgiving. East coast is the right coast am I right? G+_610GARAGE
Adam EL-Idrissi Man, if I could get network file transfers to be as fast as disk to disk..... dare to dream. :) I'll look into netgear. Yup, east coast is the right coast, in so many ways. :)
G+_Adam EL-Idrissi
610bob do you have a San? I saw on eBay and unixsurplus has rackable systems 20 bay San with sfp connections. Need to look a bit more into it but seems to be a good deal

G+_Adam EL-Idrissi
610bob specs? Or are the listed on here somewhere? I'm always curious about people's set ups. I have a hp n40l with 8gb ram and 4 3 tb wd reds. But I haven't used it more than a month, probably less, and trying to sell the reds for hgst 4tb

G+_610GARAGE
Adam EL-Idrissi No, I never listed the specs, until now. :) 2 Xeon quad core E5450 @ 3 ghz about 33 gb of ram, according to freenas, I forget how many sticks sas card running in hba mode (I believe it's 6gb\s sas) and 3 volumes comprised of mostly WD reds at different sizes. volume 1: 1.5TiB General lan storage volume 2: 3.4TiB Video editing storage (not big enough) volume 3: 3.6TiB backup storage Oh yea, its water cooled. :) Well, the cpus, bridges and ram are water cooled. That doesn't look bad, but it comes without cpus or ram. On the other hand, a good raid card is probably 50 to 100, and a case is 100+ so it's probably still a good deal. Also, regarding the switch, I decided to go with the used dell. Everything 48 ports was starting at $400. Seemed like it may be a better option for a used high end rather than a new low end. Here's the on I got: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Dell-Powerconnect-5548-48-Port-L3-Gigabit-Ethernet-Managed-Switch-Factory-Reset-/191745774010
G+_Adam EL-Idrissi
610bob nice server. I feel like you have a mini DC. /r/datahoarder and homelab are my new finds if awesome. Other than a small size increase the hgst are more reliable according to backblaze. After my VM box is built I'm planning on aio watercolor for the new freenas box. Back on topic though, that switch looks like heaven! HDMI pass through or can you do HDMI in,Ethernet out to an HDMI adapter?
G+_Adam EL-Idrissi
610bob once I get more into networking I'm thinking about upgrading my network gear bit for now netgear and to link get the job done.
G+_610GARAGE
Adam EL-Idrissi That sounds cool. I'd be interested in how those drives perform. The hdmi ports are for stacking. It allows two ports to be connected together at a higher bandwidth than 1gb. I think they use hdmi because it's a cheap port.
G+_Jared Bartimus
I just got a Cisco 3750G-24PS for $315 on ebay. Relatively significant learning curve but you can find the 48 port ones for under $600 or stack a pair of the 24 port ones. The 2960G is a little cheaper but I wanted the ability to route between VLANs without a separate router. Could be useful if you have any interest in learning Cisco IOS. I was getting about 900-950mbit between my desktop and synology NAS. Waiting on the 4 port NIC I ordered for my desktop to get here to see what it maxes out at.
