G+_610GARAGE
After watching this week's show, I wanted to share my rack's lighting. I actually been wanting to show you guys this for a while, but I could never keep my rack buttoned up long enough to get a good shot. It looks better with the front door on. It's using individually addressable led strips and an arduino micro (or is that mini). To connect the led strips to the arduino, I used 3.5mm audio jacks. I attached the strip via magnetic tape. I used silicone to glue the magnetic tape to the lights silicone housing. I tried to make the rack look like a warp core. Don't think I succeeded. My original plan was much more complicated. I wanted to monitor a log server, and if there were any problems, have the leds at the problem server flash red. But with this many leds, adding serial caused the arduino to fail. I'm guessing a stack overflow or something. I was then going to use a LPC1768, but I never got around to it. :(
G+_Ben Reese
That's awesome! I like the idea of flashing red at problem servers too if you could get that working. I think you're pretty close to the warp core look. Might just need thinner bands scrolling faster? After the new year, I'll have to get back into more Arduino stuff. G+_610GARAGE
Ben Reese Thanks. I still hope to get the red server flash going. I actually think that the pi zero will be an excellent device for that. Just need to wait for them to come back into stock. Thinner could work. But I'm not sure about faster. After all, the server not going warp 9. :) Ooo, that could be another thing I add. As a server's load increases, the bands go faster. :)
G+_Ben Yanke
I LOVE the red server flash for problems. That is so cool. The overall look is great too
G+_Jim Oler
Inspiring, I was going to build a network monitoring system but then found someone who has already completed it. http://www.amosisreal.com/wordpress/2014/03/prtg-alarm-light-with-arduino/ I'm purchasing the part today :)
