I have been using a 1/4" plate of aluminum for a mouse pad for probably 10 years, and it is the BEST mousepad I have ever used. However, to make the top smooth, I had to apply a clear coat. Unfortunately, this clear coat only lasts a few years.

 

But know I have a powder coating system and decided to powder coat it with a tinted clear. Besides looking way better, and producing a smoother finish, I hope that this will last much longer.

Jason Perry Yup. I think mouse movement is smoother. But that's not surprising when you look at what it was before I refinished it.

That's an interesting idea. I've had issues with optical mice on smooth surfaces. What's your experience with the plate, with and without the clear coat? Is the clear slick or slightly stippled?

I never tried it without the clear coat. The aluminum is brushed, so it would be a real rough surface without a clear coat. But the clear is slick.

 

I never had any issues. I suspect that the sensor can see through the clear and see the underlying brushed aluminum.

That is the coolest idea I've seen, I love seeing new ideas for using things that are recycled rather than thrown away. I drive my wife nuts because I never throw anything away.?

Gary Cheney  I know what you mean. I hate throwing stuff out too. Every time I do, I end up needing that thing that I throughout.
