G+_Christophe Vandingelen
Hi After the recent episode I went to grc.com to perform the shields up test. The test specified that my computer responded to ping requests witch stated it was a bad thing. With the same question in mind I asked the customer service of my firewall and there the statement with more than one person was that it was not a bad thing. So my question would be, is it bad that a computer responds to ping requests or not? Second question: why (not)? Thanks all
G+_Mike Tsirigotis
It's a bad thing only in "you are visible on the net " context which is exactly what Shield's Up is checking for. In reality there is nothing to worry about.
G+_Jeff Gros
Being visible isn't bad in itself. But being visible makes you a target. For example, the website shodan.io - Shodan is a search engine for visible services on the net. Having a port that it stealth is best because then no one knows its there. Closed ports are acceptable. Don't leave ports open unless you know what you are doing.
G+_Christophe Vandingelen
Jeff Gros all my ports are stealth, so am I good then?
G+_Aye Mossum
christophe vandingelen all stealth and not replying to pings is essentially invisible, which is ideal. All stealth but replying to pings is the next best thing. Not perfect, but 99.9% IMO
G+_Aye Mossum
All stealth and not replying to pings, no computer on the net can tell there even is a computer at your IP address. Replying to pings confirms that you're there, but all stealth means no packets will get to your PC.
G+_Christophe Vandingelen
Richard Craver so it's better to disable it then?
