G+_Robert Odum
I just saw episode 81. I have a question about Red drives as well. As on the show it was said to not use them on a desktop. I am using one as my main drive along with 2 other sata and 2 IDE. I got this as I don't turn my system off and thought it was a better fit. I've had it for about a year without any issue but now I am worried. Should I really be?
G+_Fr. Robert Ballecer, SJ
Yes. It's a little like saying... "I've been living with this rabid doge for a year, but it hasn't bit me yet." -- While I'm sure it's true that you haven't had any issues, now that you are aware of what the consequences can be, how can you NOT be worried? G+_Mr zenecho
Also saw the episode. Does that mean that one should not use a single red drive on a server (win2008 RC2)
G+_Robert Odum
I'm even more since it replaced a reconditioned Seagate that failed randomly.
G+_Fr. Robert Ballecer, SJ
I wouldn't use it as a single drive on a server. The problem is that the drive isn't doing as much error recovery as a standalone drive. It doesn't bother with that error recovery because it's designed to work as part of a RAID which already has built-in error recovery. If you use it as a single drive, you're on hickup away from losing files on the drive. --- Definitely not something you want to happen to your server. G+_Mr zenecho
Thats what I thought you had said Fr. Robert Ballecer, SJ during the program. Looks like I may be using the two reds that I just purchased as a DIY linux based NAS device Do you any advice on a more suitable drive for a single drive on a server? G+_Akira Yamanita
You might have seen this but here is some information from Blackblaze based on the thousands of drives that they use. http://blog.backblaze.com/2014/01/21/what-hard-drive-should-i-buy/
