G+_Steven Kaplan
XP computers after April....Leo has suggested not using the Internet with Windows XP computers after the expiration of updates next month. I am adding Ubuntu to a small partition on my XP machine, putting in a dual boot menu on start-up, and using Ubuntu when I need Internet access. I can then continue to use XP and its applications. Is there a "business opportunity" for somone to put the steps on CD-ROM or thumb drive so a non-geek could perform the upgrade easily??
G+_Chris Bickhaus
How much of a "non-geek" are you? If you are comfortable installing Windows, the actual installation of Ubuntu should be pretty easy for you. The installer will ask you how much room you want to set aside for Linux and whether you want to dual-boot. It will automatically handle changing the boot loader so that you can choose which os to load on startup. The link for installation instructions can be found on the downloads page. The Ubuntu website has instructions for creating the installation media as well: http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop/create-a-usb-stick-on-windows . If you want to start getting used to Ubuntu now, you can run Ubuntu right from the live thumbdrive without having to put it on your hard drive. Since there will be a new long-term support release in April, I would recommend playing with the current version on a thumb drive now, and waiting for the new version to be released prior to installing the os on your hard drive. If you read this and got overwhelmed, you can message me, and I will walk you through it.
G+_P Costello
Steve Gibson is not worried about staying with Windows XP after the expiration date. Check out this week's TWiT Security Now podcast.
G+_Bernard Bout
He also said that he has NOT updated to SP3 and has not taken any of the MS updates since SP2. How many users are as knowledgeable as him to prevent hacks and infections?
