You answered your own question in the question... USB. Capture cards are necessary to take a video connection like HDMI and turn it into something that the computer can accept like USB.

From my understanding the cameras that Fr. Robert Ballecer, SJ? also rely more heavily on the hardware processing the image than using the drivers.

Yes... you don't need the capture card if you use USB cameras b/c they interface via USB. However, doing so means that you can't just plug in any HDMI/SDI device and stream it. (as you can w/the capture card... and perhaps a HDCP stripper)

 

HOWEVER, I chose the 920 b/c it has hardware that handles the h.264 encoding IN THE CAMERA, before it gets to the USB interface. That means there's less for my computer's CPU to do... which I like. :)

Depends a lot on your needs. I wound have the card option and the usb option on the same computer fur back-up. Like running Windows 10 under both a VM app and Boot Camp on the MAC. In fact that what Remix OS is an bate VM app with the Android Marshmallow OS per-installed.
