G+_Eddie Foy
The start of the Self Aware House. TIG welded up a 19 inch rack (pre-mades are overly priced) 1/2" (13mm) square tubing, with the front rails purchased premade. 39" height (22U?) rack. G+_Eddie Foy
Well my house has been automated for nearly a decade.
G+_Jason Perry
I am looking building my wiring closet this summer and building out from there. I have quite a few cables run but it is time to tidy up the utility room. After thats done I want to start playing with automation. I think I want to start with data collection (room temp, humidity, ect) before I start automating anything. I binge watched Super House TV not too long ago and plan on using that as a starting point

G+_Eddie Foy
I've been using Indigo Pro on the Mac for central control for a long time now. With mainly Insteon devices. A few left over x-10's and a handful of my own custom made stuff. Indigo is nice. Has a client (mac and iOS) and also webserver for access the server side. And anything it can't do out of the box, you can write your own applescripts or Python scripts. Python can be used to write your own plug ins too. And I'll say support is top notch. At one point, if someone approached the front door, the motion sensor would trip, pause my TiVo, turn on the front door cam, switch the TV input to the cam so I can see if its worth answering the door. (that aspect is in transition right now)
G+_Jason Perry
How are you liking the Insteon hardware. I have been looking at it. I am looking at the different systems in my house and coming up with one or two first steps. For HVAC there is the obvious temperature and humidity sensors in different rooms. I also want to make anemometers for the vents out of old PC case fans so I can see the air flow. I am also looking at occupancy sensors and switching lights on and off. more so switching them off. It seems since I switched to LED lighting it is okay to leave the lights on all day. I kinda want to hack a 3 way switch and use it as a on off to start before I move into more complacated things down the road. from there if I can find a way to sense if the light is on or off I dont need fancy controlls. I have an IP camera or two that I am looking at incorperating into my media server. I think I am going to have a test room and once I work out the bugs move from there. G+_Eddie Foy
The Insteon hardware is pretty nice. Linking and 'scenes' can be done. Pros and cons, like with any other system. Indigo is not limited to Insteon/X-10. Does z-wave too. And there is a bunch of plug ins for other hardware, Sonos, Global Cache, etc. But Indigo is Mac only. Temp/Humidity in every room? Does that matter? Is each room on its own HVAC zone? As for the air flow anemometer, don't see a reason to know the flow. Motorized vents sure. I'd rather have the delta temp. I haven't seen a reliable occupancy sensor set up. Heard about a bunch, but also see most stop using them. If you are sitting in a room for a long period of time (watching a movie) the systems, kinda reset to unoccupied.
G+_Jason Perry
If it does z-wave I am interested. I recently had a new furnace put in tgat uses z-wave in its thermostat. Wasnt sold on the tech but had to have it put in. I will probably have to look into a refurbished mack mini. My obsession with the temp and air flow in every room stems from my wife's love of telling me that it is too hot in one area of the house and too cold in others. That led to a lot of thoughts on how to balance my furnace. For the most part I think I am only really interested in the difference from the average. My main interest in occupancy sensors are for rooms like the laundry room or utility room where people seem to go into and "forget" to turn out the light. If I were to use them in other rooms there wouldn't be a turn on automatically function to them and the delay to turn off would be around 2 hours give or take a half hour. Leviton has one that I like the looks of it gets wired in on your ceiling and has a 360 field of view around and 130 view down.

G+_Jason Marsh
Looking good! If it's going to be wall-mounted, I'd recommend a diagonal brace on the sides, followed by some pickin' an grinnin' on the banjo!

G+_Jason Marsh
Mobile Multi-Gigabit network? Mobile personal Netflix mirror? You have a bandwidth addiction problem :) I thought about putting in a proper copper closet and wiring up my home, but I was thinking about a smallish swing-out rack. I think wheels would be more convenient for access, though. You documenting your build-out anywhere?
G+_Eddie Foy
Document? LOL Nope. I design as I build usually. Project is in limbo right now. Trying to figure out where in the house to put it.
G+_Jason Marsh
All projects are in limbo until finished. Some just continue to evolve. Perhaps your project is on sabbatical, or maybe it's finding itself while hiking across Europe. Maybe it's a freeloader that seems to always be a dollar short. I'm sure all will be worthwhile when your home becomes truly self-aware :) Just make sure you submit all your code for approval of the TWiTKH community.
