G+_Eddie Foy
You guys use a hosts file? I've started, for internal stuff and blocking some adware type sites. Also any reason to put a gateway IP address on a managed switch? Its set, just don't see why it would/should be needed.
G+_Fr. Robert Ballecer, SJ
Did a segment on that a while back...
G+_Ben Reese
Fr. Robert Ballecer, SJ?, I remember that episode... You recommended it as a way to prank your friends if I remember right...
G+_Ben Reese
Eddie Foy?, they usually have a web interface... Would it have the ability to download firmware updates or check for them directly from the source?
G+_Travis Hershberger
In Linux I drop the hostname and IP address in whenever I have a hardcoded IP. Otherwise, that's what internal firewalls are for (layer 3 after firewall and IDS/IPS.)
G+_Eddie Foy
Ben Reese Cisco charges for the upgrades from what I gather. And I'll be damned if I can find out how/where to buy it. Sent in a ticket for it and got a canned response and closed ticket.
G+_Akira Yamanita
A gateway address on a switch is used for the same reason as any other device: the ability to reach a different network (subnet) without an explicit route. If you have a flat network and the switch doesn't need to be able to reach an external host for administration, configuration file backups, or firmware/software updates, time synchronization, etc., then it's not needed. G+_Akira Yamanita
FYI, Cisco SMARTnet contracts are required for support and access to updates. You can buy them through CDW and the like.
