G+_George Kozi
Windows 8.1 - First Impressions So, in order to set it up, they want you to enter a code that they email to you... but you are in the middle of the setup and to get it, you have to be able to receive an email, which you can do after you set up the OS... Kinda idiotic. It reminds me of a Fax repair helpdesk, which wanted you to fax them a form that described why your fax wasn't working.... G+_Peter Phillips
I don't understand why they still bother with DRM.
G+_George Kozi
I just skipped that step.
G+_Jose Gomez
I was presented with a text message option. I got the text & completed setup. Worked for both my PC & my Surface RT. Even a feature phone can conquer this step. Dumb? Kinda. Maybe its less about DRM & more like multi-factor authentication. A security step to insure that the person claiming to install the OS is actually the person doing so. It's just a theory.
G+_Yonas A (eriman)
you mean to update from 8 to 8.1 you need a code?
G+_George Kozi
It was just one of the things that flashed by during the setup. It's something to do with your account, but you can skip that setup step.
G+_Jack Zhang
It's like if you have 2 factor authentication on for your first setup on your Android phone that's also your phone for your activation code. Fortunately, SMS still works during phone setup, so that's easy to overcome. Try to setup a phone on Google before setting up the phone service and you're kind of out of luck... G+_Jody Fanning
Going from Windows 8 to 8.1 doesn't require any codes at all. You just need to click a few buttons and watch lots of progress bars and a few reboots. I just did it and it worked fine.
