G+_Garage Geek Guy
Would really like to hear Mike Elgan and Paul Thurrott talk about what, if anything, Microsoft can do in the consumer market. Thurrot has mentioned repeatedly that Microsoft should be broken up. Maybe they should spin the consumer division off to sink or swim on it's own - with it's own share price, board and CEO. Microsoft could have their own version of Lenovo ala IBM.
G+_Garage Geek Guy
Robert Carrasco To be honest I had no idea what IBM's current stake in Lenovo was, but yes, it looks like it is trivial at best. My butchering of the facts aside, it still left IBM to concentrate on it's core business.
G+_Garage Geek Guy
Here's an example of Microsoft's Enterprise mentality holding them back. They've sold around 80 millions XBox 360's. Sony and Wii both let their customers run streaming services (Netflix) at no additional charge. Microsoft sees this as an opportunity for profit, and forces it's customers to buy Xbox Live gold in order to use Netflix, Hulu+, etc. Amazon is practically giving devices away to get more eyeballs in front of their entertainment ecosystem. The current state of our Xbox 360? Gathering dust. Kids play the PS3 and we use Roku on our main TV. Xbox could have been a central entertainment hub in our living room, with the opportunity to sell movies, music, games, etc. Potentially much more profitable and competitive than selling Xbox live memberships. Just one example, there's many more.
G+_Garage Geek Guy
The Xbox is a success for sure, seems like it could have been much more though. I've personally never seen a Surface in the wild. I've heard IBM is a services company, and I know they make a lot of money. The only thing I'm sure of is that I've got an IBM keyboard that is about 25 years old that is one of the finest pieces of equipment I have ever owned. :) That, and they are about to hire 800 people here in Baton Rouge, so they must be doing ok. BTW - I work for Apple.
