G+_E. Matt Armstrong
What is the FAA reg on drones near airports? I have been looking to get a drone, but I do live close to a small airport, on the edge of the 5 miles mentioned in this article. Could I get in trouble for flying a drone over my own property? G+_DeWayne Shorts
Edward Armstrong it depends on two things. Is it a towered airport? Is it on this map as a no fly area? If the answer is yes to either question then You Can Not Fly, even on your own property. https://www.mapbox.com/drone/no-fly/

G+_Jeff Brand
Edward Armstrong , DeWayne Shorts : As I've mentioned in the past, that no-fly map has many inaccuracies, especially when dealing with smaller airports. I've submitted a ticket to that effect with no response.. Technically the 5-mile radius depends on the "size" of the airport as determined by number of annual passengers. If you plan on flying within 3 miles then definitely call the tower chief to notify them of your activity in the area. They will want to know your flight ceiling above sea level. (It's interesting to know that this is the same procedure they use for cranes operating within the same radius.) In my situation the airport is on the top of a hill which keeps most traffic far above me. I have yet to call in a flight, but I only have a Syma X5C and don't fly much above the trees. That said, be aware of flight patterns, follow the max altitude recommendations (500ft?) and as long as you're at the edge of the radius it shouldn't be a problem. When in doubt, call the tower. G+_52Degrees
I've been seeing these reports and have serious doubts over their validity. I remember in flight school, trying to see other airplanes that were nearby, and it's not easy at all. That was in a Cessna 172 flying under 100 mph. How can anyone believe that a small r/c aircraft is visible or identifiable in any way too a 400+ mph aircraft with an extremely limited field of view? G+_Marty Ballard
clay vitus? I'm with you, I think spotting a drone while in flight would be nearly impossible. Not totally impossible, but nearly, especially given their size. As someone who's hit a bird in flight in a 172, I don't see drones as very much of a threat to commercial aircraft.
