G+_Eddie Foy
Anyone know of or have experience with a dual access drive? I'd like to have a USB drive, that is accessible from both USB and Ethernet at the same time. Project is my Roku. The Plex server UI/UX in my Synology NAS blows after last update. I can pop in a USB drive and the Roku will access it just fine, but I'd like to be able to transcode and stuff on said drive without the 'sneaker-net' The Roku is pretty dang locked own. nmap show nothing open for playing. G+_Jason Perry
Oh the never ending search for the ultimate media server. What Synology NAS are you using?
G+_Travis Hershberger
Duel SAS ports sure, servers, just pop em in the bay. Two different access methods not designed for it is not. Why not just use the USB as a share from the NAS? Will that not work both from the PC and Roku?
G+_Eddie Foy
Jason Perry DS413j and RS 825+ Travis Hershberger because the Roku has a USB port and won't 'share' over the network. So passing files to it via the LAN is not possible. Hence the requirement for dual access. Plus its how the apps work on the RoKu. Its not a forefront project right now. G+_Eddie Foy
Ah, correction: the roku plex app is the one that blows chunks.
G+_Travis Hershberger
In other words, don't get a Roku to stream media via DLNA. Thanks for the (unintentional) review.

G+_Eddie Foy
I do love my Roku. But the Plex app got too fancy, and is now cumbersome. Need to look into other apps.
G+_Ben Reese
Dual access seems like something that would be mostly constrained by the hardware. I'd be surprised if Synology doesn't have a NAS that has USB client support at the same time. An A/B switch for USB would work well too, but that's not really dual-access. The Roku could probably be hacked to enable SMB host support too. The cheapest/easiest thing to do is get another device with better Plex support - like a Chromecast (UI on the phone) or Fire TV stick.
G+_Eddie Foy
Was pondering a RasPi. Ethernet to NAS, to xfer to a USB stick on the Pi, and a USB file transfer cable to the Roku.
G+_Jeff Brand
This isn't what you were asking for, but I use my Roku with DLNA just fine with this app: https://channelstore.roku.com/details/2213/roku-media-player It supports USB and DLNA. I use the latter regularly with my Netgear router's ReadyDLNA service, a Buffalo Linkstation, and any Windows 7 or higher machine in the house. G+_Jeff Brand
If you want to drop Plex entirely, Handbrake.fr can help keep the conversion process simple, or ffmpeg for the power users. Sidenote: I've never heard much about rooting Rokus which is either a testament to their bootloader security or the general satisfaction of the device's feature set. G+_Eddie Foy
Been using handbrake to make the files Roku happy already. I do have a spare roku I might pop open and see if there is a port/pads for a console. :P
