G+_Marc Fellman
I have got the early build of win8.1 update 1 yesterday and I'm finding everything is working the way it should except the new start menu. Does anyone know how to activate it?
G+_Damian Mongru
LaRosa Johnson is right the new Start Menu was for 'upcoming' updates to Windows. Some speculate an 'update 2' in the Autumn, or probably next year (Win 9, maybe). When the start menu arrives, if you are on the desktop and press the start key, what will happen? I like the idea of the start screen as an enhanced start menu, but I think that's just me.
G+_Tanner Lynn
ahh thanks LaRosa Johnson & Damian Mongru Guess I missed the "Upcoming update" part I think when we are in desktop and press the start button there will presumably be a win7 like view of installed apps and on the right side there will be live tiles that you are used to now. I do like that on my non touch screen vm of update 1 it auto starts to desktop mode.
G+_Damian Mongru
Now I think about it, they seem to be splitting the touchscreen and keyboard/mouse inputs. It seems as if they see the desktop as keyboard/mouse operation, and therefore pressing start would get a start menu. It's weird, they seem to bring the metro and desktop worlds together (e.g. metro apps on the desktop) and at the same time push them further apart (e.g. never seeing the start screen). G+_Tanner Lynn
Yes, The ability to access Metro apps from the taskbar seems weird to me as well. We'll see when they push the start menu out
G+_Damian Mongru
Metro apps on the taskbar is okay - the main problem for multitasking and productivity in Metro apps is it is difficult to switch between apps. This is true with a non-screen metro apps (mouse to the corner, drag down etc). My suggestion was to be able to pin this list to the side much like a taskbar. It still feels like two separate OSs to me.
G+_Peter Phillips
How could they not have fixed this?
