I wonder if ATM/POS systems are included in those numbers since they are more than likely running XP Embedded.

That being said, the customer that my company supports has around 20,000+ desktops of which at least 1,000 are still on XP. This is mostly due to some legacy app incompatibilities.

My guess would be that they do not include the Windows Embedded devices. As they are selling 350m-ish devices a year I think that would quickly get you to 1 billion-ish computers.

Also, Windows Embedded is found in a crazy number of devices of all types. A lot of these devices are not Internet enabled so should not be as critical a security risk. Finally, they (Embedded) have updates for another year or so.

Although, my guesswork could be way off the mark as I have no real way of picturing numbers in the millions, and billions, they're just abstract concepts to me.
