G+_Damian Mongru
Paul Thurrott says there are between 1.2 and 1.5 billion Windows PCs. As a very rough guess, somewhere around 400 million Win XP boxes.
G+_Michael Kizer
I wonder if ATM/POS systems are included in those numbers since they are more than likely running XP Embedded. That being said, the customer that my company supports has around 20,000+ desktops of which at least 1,000 are still on XP. This is mostly due to some legacy app incompatibilities. G+_Damian Mongru
My guess would be that they do not include the Windows Embedded devices. As they are selling 350m-ish devices a year I think that would quickly get you to 1 billion-ish computers. Also, Windows Embedded is found in a crazy number of devices of all types. A lot of these devices are not Internet enabled so should not be as critical a security risk. Finally, they (Embedded) have updates for another year or so. Although, my guesswork could be way off the mark as I have no real way of picturing numbers in the millions, and billions, they're just abstract concepts to me.
