G+_Eddie Foy
Looking to do some research on a few security DVRs. Expecting on trashing/bricking the HD in the throws as a result. Is there a SATA to USB thumbdrive adapter that will allow booting from? (making the thumbdrive isn't much of a problem, I think, DD works nice overall)
G+_Travis Hershberger
Most security DVRs encrypt the hard drive. So sure you can make an exact replica of the drive, but you'll never get any coherent information off of it unless you use them both from the same box. Better off rolling your own solution if you want to easily transport the video around.
G+_Eddie Foy
I'm not looking to get the video, just muck around in other stuff. So far on the first one, the linux users are not related to the application users. I'm telnet'ed in (love creds of 'root' and ). They just use a proprietary encrypted video format, like a TiVo. (Tivo used a modified Apple HFS. I had compiled my own linux kernel so I could mount a TiVo drive in the past. And desoldered, reprogrammed and put back a EEPROM to bypass the encryption) That and dd worked without the special kernel.
G+_Travis Hershberger
Eddie Foy Nice. That's one of those I could do it, but never had a reason come up to spend the time on it.
