G+_Richard Anter
Thanks for all of your awesome segments exploring the power of the Synology DiskStation NAS! I've had one since before they were popular, and I still feel it's the best technology decision I've ever made! Anyway, my question: I have a Synology DS214play, and I'm wondering how I can set it up such that I can connect it to a VPN, like PIA, for specific traffic, and still remotely access it (via Quick Connect) when I'm away from home. Do I need a NAS with dual NICs and a special router? I've heard about using VLANs and tagging, but I'm not sure if I need to go to such lengths. Please help! G+_Ben Reese
So, you want to connect to a VPN (PIA) and have specific applications - like Cloud Sync - go over that network rather than your normal netwok. Correct? I don't know yet how to do that, but wanted to verify I understood the question.
G+_Richard Anter
Ben Reese thanks for responding and checking me here. You are correct. I want to have a specific app - Download Station namely - to go over the VPN network interface, and I want the rest of my apps, like DS File, Drive, Moments, etc., to communicate over the WAN via the LAN network interface, so I can continue to use my friendly server name to access my files from the DS _ apps on my mobile device. G+_Ben Reese
It looks like a lot of other people want to do the same thing - and now I'm interested too. Found this forum with 8ish pages talking about how to accomplish this: https://forum.synology.com/enu/viewtopic.php?t=92519&start=45 I'll have to do some testing of my own to see if I can get it working. forum.synology.com - Service By Interface (Download Station over VPN) - Page 4 - Synology Forum
G+_Richard Anter
So it looks like many of the same solutions I've been seeing around the web: Best option: install Docker and run a second instance of DSM on top of it. I'm sure there are performance downsides to this, but I haven't figured out what they are yet. Second option: enhancement request. My big question is: is the real solution two NICs and DSM software that allows binding of services to network interfaces? Would that solve the issue elegantly and with highest performance? Is that how an enterprise network would handle it?
