G+_Josh Green
When I tried Linux back in the late 90's, it really stunk. It was impossible for me to figure out at the time. Lately, I've been playing with Ubuntu Desktop a little, and it was really amazing. So simple to use. No such concern as "drivers" anymore. Once I got the hang of how it worked underneath, I installed Ubuntu Server (minimum installation) to hold my music and backups. I had quickly learned in the "user-friendly" Desktop version that the command-line is how you get important things done, unless you were simply streaming video over the net. But with the "Server" edition, there is no "Desktop." It's all command-line. It's been a huge adjustment going all the way back to a pure terminal interface, for EVERYTHING, but the little guy is rocking along, faster than ever. Currently using forked-daapd to share a central music library to all of the iTunes apps in the house, and running a Windows/Samba file server to save our extra Windows Documents crap. Also have BOINC running for PrimeGrid and SETI in the system's down time. I'm glad I started dabbling again. Time to start teaching myself the things that those server guys never felt like explaining to me.
G+_Josh Green
Proper DNS is next. Done it before, but here's my chance do do it correctly from scratch.
G+_Derek J.D.
It's just reading really, man pages and --help. Learning Linux the hard way or other free books are always nice to have. Look for a few forums and communities. Linux didn't stink, it just didn't have the pretty colors you wanted.
G+_Josh Green
Thanks, Derek J.D.. I've been limping around pretty well so far. DNS is working great, next will be to switch DHCP over from the router to get dynamic updates to the DNS records. It's still a huge adjustment, but I'm STARTING to get the hang of things.
