G+_Adam Olivero
Hey Know Holers. Got a good one here. I have a PC running Ubuntu 14.04.2 LTS. The video card is a Nividia BFG Geforce 7600 GS OC. It was running fine with the Nvidia 304-updates drivers from the Ubuntu Repos for Additional Drivers on 14.04.1. Once I upgraded the kernel to 14.04.2 the video stopped working. To get it working I had to purge the nvidia drivers and switch back to using nouveau open source drivers. I'd be fine with that situation except that Steam doesn't work with the nouveau drivers. Any ideas?
G+_Arcturus Lancaster
Can try install most recent driver from nvidia ppa. If that does not work I would drop back to the older kernel. I stopped using Ubuntu cuz of random breakage from every stupid update pushed. Now on mint and selective about updates. Still have memory leak issues with ff and nemo being worst banshee and cinimon being the slow leak.
G+_Adam Olivero
I've tried the newer drivers from Xorg Edgers and Nividia PPA. None work :( Might be a good time for me to switch to Linux Mint. It's pretty stable? Does Dropbox, Google Chrome and Steam work good on it?
G+_Timothy Hamlett
Chrome yes, Dropbox iirc, and steam I dunno. Mint is my preferred Linux distro, but I still have to find my favorite WM
G+_Arcturus Lancaster
Dropbox and steam work fine as does virtual box. Only niggle I have is vb in seamless mode will push the start menu down the width of the top bar in cinnamon. Am on mint 16 running 9800gt
G+_Adam Olivero
Good to know that Dropbox and Steam work. So if I was to switch it would be a complete format of the hard drive right?
G+_Arcturus Lancaster
Can save your /home partition if you like tho it may cause config issues. Best is backup /home and transfer what is needed

G+_Adam Olivero
Good one Michael Heinz and thanks for the advice Arcturus Lancaster and Timothy Hamlett. I've downloaded Linux Mint 17.1 XFC (Its an old desktop so I though the minimal XFC would be best, plus I'm familiar with it via Raspberry Pis) Giving it a go tomorrow. I'll let you know how I make out.
G+_Adam Olivero
Success! I'm on Linux Mint 17.1 XFC. Couldn't save the data and had to format but thankfully everything important was backed up in dropbox. Mint is way faster than Ubuntu thats for sure!
