G+_Stephen Rusboldt
The following was said on Security Now Episode 521: LEO: But the vector is usually Flash or something else. Just don't have Flash on your system. STEVE: I have to find out how the CryptoWall is getting in because we've seen some zero-days, I've talked about them with Padre, that were Flash-based. And unfortunately, most people do have Flash, also. So you're right, getting rid of Flash would work, except then we couldn't play your videos on TWiT.tv. LEO: No, we have HTML5. STEVE: Oh. LEO: Yeah. STEVE: Only recently? LEO: No, we've had it for a while. Otherwise we wouldn't work on iOS. STEVE: But, eh, okay. It's funny because I saw a whole lot of traffic about not being able to... LEO: People don't really understand what's going on in life. STEVE: Okay. LEO: They seem to be quite clueless sometimes. As far as I know, from the TWiT web site, Windows web browsers can only view the video steam on Ustream or BitGravity. They both use Flash. In the past Leo has stated that a stream that doesn't use Flash is available to iOS. He has stated that this steam costs him money, so he doesn't offer it to other platforms. On Know How... it has been shown how to use VLC to watch TWiT. This uses the BitGravity Flash stream. VLC can display Flash without using the Adobe Flash program. But this technique is not what users find on the live.TWiT.tv web page. So, it seems to me that Leo is the one that is clueless. Maybe he should not be so snarky. G+_Eddie Foy
I guess Leo doesn't consider 3rd party Flash to be TWiT Flash.
G+_Jerry Ham
Interesting. Although the recorded shows do seem to use an HTML5 player, certainly the live stream tries to use Flash. Just for kicks, I fired up the Edge browser in Windows 10 and turned off Flash in the advanced settings. By default, the Live stream then said "missing flash player". But, when I switched it using the drop-down to Bitgravity, it played fine with the HTML5 player. So it CAN do it, just no normal user is ever going to figure out how to make it work. (BTW, when I tried this there was no actual live show; it was one of the pre-recorded ones on the live stream. So your mileage may vary when they turn on an actual live stream). G+_Eddie Foy
Wayne Hobbins I wasn't the one who said 'snarky' And do you mean HTML5 over HTTPS?
G+_Stephen Rusboldt
Wayne Hobbins TWit pays for a non Flash stream for iOS (your iPad). Chrome installs a sandboxed copy of Adobe Flash. That is why your iPad and Chrome on Apple works with the live stream. This does not provide a non Flash live stream for Windows browsers. I think snarky (sharply critical; cutting; snide; cranky; irritable) is a good description when stating your viewers: People don't really understand what's going on in life. They seem to be quite clueless sometimes.
G+_Eddie Foy
Stephen Rusboldt I think my favorite Leo gaff, was on The Tech Guy (during the in betweens) when he stated that the callers, that call into his call-in talk show, don't really matter as far as the show goes. G+_Jeff Brand
Leo was thinking of the video archives, not live broadcast. JWPlayer, their new video player, supports HTML5 playback with Flash fallback. As for the issues surrounding live video, there was a discussion about this last month where I included lots of details about why live streaming on desktops without Flash isn't quite ready yet.
