G+_Michael Sherwood
I am trying to remotely control a ubuntu 16.04 via a wi-fi hotspot that is not connected to the internet. The equipment using, for the ubuntu 16.04 box is a kangaroo mini computer and the remote control computer is an iPad iOS 11 with termius, on the kangaroo mini I believe I have configured the hotspot as I can see the name I gave the wi-fi hotspot on the iPad. But it still does not work, do I need software like tigerVNC server installed on the ubuntu computer? How do I configure termius on the iPad? Is there an know how episode that goes through the process or a good step by step web site? Other questions like this How do I create a windows 10 1803 hot spot that is not connected to the internet? Do I need software tigerVNC server installed on windows to remotely control the laptop? Can I use the wi-fi card that is within the laptop to create a wi-fi hotspot that is not connected to the internet.
G+_Rajarajan Rajamani
Verify IP connectivity before jumping into vnc. Is WiFi configured right on Ubuntu? From your Ubuntu box, can you ping the router/hotspot. I am assuming the iPad can ping the wifi router.
G+_Dan Hockey
Do you have a DHCP server running on the Ubuntu box? Your iPad will never get an IP address if don't have a DHCP server. If you do you may have to check it with another computers wifi to make sure it's all working before trying the iPad.
G+_Michael Sherwood
Thank you, I will check to see if the DHCP server is running.
G+_Rajarajan Rajamani
Simplest way of verifying DHCP is to check if your iPad got an IP address and you can access the router web page (usually 192.168.1.1)
G+_Rajarajan Rajamani
Do a similar check on the Ubuntu box too. You'll need a keyboard/monitor on it for some time till things are sorted out
G+_Ben Reese
On Windows you can create a "Hosted Network". It requires compatible Wi-Fi adapters, but I've never tried one that didn't work. Setup is all from the command line. Years ago it was rumored that Microsoft would be surfacing the feature in GUI form, but I don't think that ever happened. I've just created batch files on the desktop to turn it on/off. Also, the PDANET client has controls built-in so you can share your tethered connection with nearby devices. https://www.windowscentral.com/how-turn-your-windows-10-pc-wireless-hotspot windowscentral.com - How to turn your Windows 10 PC into a wireless hotspot
