G+_Joseph Potthast
Hello All, So I'm 90% sure I"ve got this set up okay but would appreciate a second opinion from people. I'm the it guy for a non-profit and we're setting up a wireless access point in our office conference room. I've been working with our headquarters and they are taking care of the dhcp server and filtering content as well as keeping this out of our network. (I'm assuming they've set up a vlan). This however isn't the point just a little pre-knowledge to help set up the scenario. The access point uses POE and I've got the adapter okay. I've done a trial where I have the POE and the AP in the conference room together to get everything working. However before mounting it permanently I want to try and reduce clutter in the conference room. To do that I was going to put the POE in the cable closet. I want to put it between the switch and the designated cable that runs to the conference room where it will be mounted. That way power should not be going into the switch (which is 13 years old and probably not POE capable) and just runs around the cable in the building. Did I miss anything obvious? I've done some looking around online with POE but I admit it this is more that I've dealt with before and I'd rather not set the building on fire accidentally. G+_Travis Hershberger
That should be just fine. I've got a couple trendnet security cameras setup the same way you would like to. Network Closet Patch Panel -> POE Injector -> POE Device. Just make sure to get the in/out cables in the right place on the POE Injector, send power back to the switch and you may loose a port! G+_Joseph Potthast
Thanks Travis, Thankfully they do a very good job of labeling the POE with one marked switch and the other marked POE Device.
G+_Billy Vaughn
As Travis Hershberger posted, you won't have any issues doing it that way. In my office we do the exact same thing. Our switches and power injectors are located in a wiring closet and the AP's around in the ceiling around the building.
G+_Ben Reese
It sounds like you're currently setup the way Travis Hershberger? is... With the POE injector after the patch panel - likely closer to the access point. If that's the case I presume you're asking if you can move the injector to between the switch and the patch panel? If that's the question, then yes. POE injectors are usually high enough voltage that you won't have any problems running a couple hundred feet and will still be able to power the device. I currently have that setup with the access point probably 150' from the switch/injector/panel.
