Hey folks!  Does anyone have any experience using a cheap Android tablet as a connected photo frame?  2 years ago I got my mom the Kodak Pulse frame, which has an e-mail address and photos that get sent to that address are resized and transmitted to the frame via wifi for display.  The Pulse is no longer available, but it seems like I should be able to roll my own for a similar  price.  Perhaps something like...

1) Nexus 7 and desktop dock

2) An obscure gmail login that would be unlikely to be guessed by spammers

3) An app to automatically save image attachments to a folder

4) An app to resize and move those images to the display folder

5) A slideshow app (or maybe just Android 'daydream' function?) that uses that display folder as the source

Or maybe I want to use the device/login's Google Drive space as the source folder, so that I could dump images in directly too?  There are so many possibilities...has anyone tried this, or does my post inspire anyone with great ideas?

I wouldn't waste the processing power of a Nexus 7. Polaroid and another company have nice dual core 9 and 10 inch tablets rolling out soon for $100 - $150 based on CES reports. Those units are suppose to have far better screens than the cheap Android tablets that are currently on the market.?

Dave Bach, good point and this crossed my mind.  I've heard that the Polaroid device won't have access to the Play store, though...have you heard otherwise?  That's not the end of the world...if I'm hacking like this, I can certainly side-load, but in general I think that not having the Play store is a deal-breaker.  It would be nice to be able to also grab this thing off the stand and hand it to my kid to play games and things, too.  Maybe there is another of those $130 devices that does play nice with Google's requirements for Play.

Yeah, Jon....the Pulse is a good frame. My mom's still works well too...but you can't get them anymore (for a reasonable price). I did some research last night and found an app called "Auto Attachment Downloader". Haven't tried it but the reviews are good and it seems like exactly what I need. Really, this makes the idea possible...there are lots of ways to get fancy, but with this one app (that lets you pick the destination folder) and Jelly Bean's daydream slideshow, I think you can make it happen.
