G+_Donald Burr
Here's some potentially good news for those who want to dabble in quadcopters/multirotors/other RC vehicles but are nervous about working with potentially explode-y LiPo batteries. (Well, not just for multi rotors, but really is good news for all portable electronics in general. Even laptop, cell phone, etc. batteries have been known to spontaneously explode/catch fire.) This still looks pretty early-days, but it's definitely promising, especially in the lifetime (number of charge cycles) department. My one question is, what discharge rates are they getting? Can they match the 25C-35C you get off your typical 3S LiPo? Or the 35-70+C of the high-discharge LiPos like Turnigy's nano-tech line? I didn't see any info about discharge rates in the article, and I can't find the research paper that was mentioned. Still, something to keep an eye on. http://news.stanford.edu/news/2015/march/aluminum-ion-battery-033115.html
