Hey all,

 

I'm wanting to be able to monitor data usage by device/IP on my home network.  Are there any free software options for this?  Thanks!

I use pfsense firewall for this. I can also throttle the bandwidth based on ip or Mac. It will run on a wide array of devices from a link sys router to a i7.

This will work with just a standard isp type router, or does it require a router with some kind of feature set?

PfSense is a software router for the computer. What type of monitoring are you looking for? Just bandwidth usage or IP address logging too?

Simple monitoring.  I just want to know which device on my network is sucking the most bandwidth.  Thats it.

Use an old laptop, a 100Mbps hub, and Wireshark. :)
