G+_Damien Wessling
What are your data requirements and usage? Media server, file storage, redundancy?
G+_Benjamin Webb
Depends what you mean for upgradeable. I build a Haswell based Freenas on a Pentium with 16 Gig ECC ram and 6 3TB WD Red drives for about $1200. I run it in Raid Z2. If I replace all the drives with bigger drives I can increase the size of the pool (Have not done this yet). Idles at about 42 watts. I run MythTV, Plex, and BitTorrent sync from it in jails. This is probably the most fault tolerant option between number of drives that can fail and ZFS scrubs to fix other issues. If you want plug and play with random drives I suggest Drobo. Heard good things about Synology as well. Prefer rolling my own as it will always be supported by me and I know how to pick the right hardware for the job. G+_Benjamin Webb
Drobo is probably what you want then 2 2TB drives will get you 1.81TB of storage and easily expand. I usually recommend a min of 3 drives for a normal NAS in Raid 5 then replace one at a time all 3 then expand pool. You pick the size NAS by what you want in the future. Drobo has a capacity counter on the website so feel free to play with it. I'd go with at least the five disc one and make sure it has Ethernet port as not all of them do anymore.
