1. networking-explain how to....bridge an isp supplied dsl modem/router with a router, vpn, and port forwarding.

2.VM servers. I use Virtual Box but having VM's setup on multiple computers in a pain to keep track of.

3. Home made NAS and raid setup. This is the reason I'm saving my money for a Synology NAS. Until then I keep experimenting with debian/ubuntu set ups.

VPN you just need to port forward.  A router you can't do unless there is someway to directly pass through your internet connection.  Even if you DMZ the router it you would still get double NAT issues.  Best advice is to get your own separates if your isp allows it.  I have my own Motorola DOCSIS  3 connected to an old E3000 running Tomato.  Works fine up to 120 mbps throughput as line as you wire it so I need to upgrade as I am paying for 150 mbps.

As for VM Servers I has no idea as I am lazy and cheap so stick to virtualbox.

As for NAS I would suggest Freenas.  It will prevent bit rot which Synology cannot.  I did spend $1200 building it with ECC ram as suggested though but it does have 10 TB of usable space from 6 3TB drives in RaidZ2.  I also installed MythTV server in a jail on it although it was painful.
