I have a DS716+II that's been running for about a year now, using 2 wd 2tb red drives. I've only used about 15% of space so far so I got another wd 2tb red drive.

I'd like to put the new drive in and swap out one of the old drives and let the new drive run for a year. Do I just pull out one of the disks and put the new in? Would it speed things up if I format the new disk first?

I don't remember what I did to the disks when I first set it up.

It's currently using the btrfs file system. I haven't found anything in the storage manager that would let me unmount a perfectly good drive so I can remove it.

Don't format. Don't power down.

 

Check to make sure you're running a mirror. If you are, then hot-swap one drive with your new drive. Log in and once it has finished mirroring, you're all good.

If we do this, is it safe to consider the drive you pulled out a backup? Or is that data still at risk of being wiped when I insert it back into the NAS?

I would perform a scrub of the volume before removing anything if you have a choice. This should remove any lingering bit rot. Btrfs should help the system decide which drive is correct if they disagree.

I pulled one drive out and put the new drive in . Had to go into the storage manager and tell it to re-sync with the new drive. So far it's a rather painless procedure. It's now syncing.

This brings up a new question, what will it do when I put the old drive back in? Will it ask to wipe the drive like it did when I installed the new one?

Maybe I'll have to try it when it's done syncing.
