G+_Dan Hockey
I have a HP Proliant ML10 gen9(I bought on sale) I upgraded from an i3 to a xeon and now I'm looking for ecc memory for it. It came with one stick of 4gb of non-ecc memory. It has a total of 4 slots. The data sheet for the xeon claims a max of 64gb. Crucial also claims a max of 64gb. 16.04 lts shows eight cores over the two it had before. I plan on eventually using it as a some sort of vm server, I haven't done much research on software yet because I don't enough memory to experiment yet. I know the Padre likes kingston but I'll break the bank if I buy 64gb all in one go. I've always have had good luck with Crucial for my non server computers, but for a home server with ecc ram I have no clue. Would it be safe adding one stick at a time? I know I could afford doing it that way. I hope I don't end starting a flame war by ask what brand to use.
G+_Dan Hockey
I forgot to ad this is what Crucial came up with.. crucial.com - RAM & SSD Upgrades | HP - Compaq ProLiant ML10 Gen9 | Crucial.com
G+_Travis Hershberger
Yes, you should be able to buy and install 1 stick at a time. You might want to check xbyte.com - Home page, they normally have better prices on OEM parts. Also, it takes zero money to setup a vm server. The hypervisor is always free (some free versions are severaly crippled tho.). If you want to get into IT, I recommend KVM, Xen, or XenServer, or hyper-v. Business wise, nobody has a reason to run expensive VMWare anymore. Edit:. Phone autocorrect doesn't handle tech terms well at all.
G+_Vazrik Marcarian
For reliable information check hp website. I have had wrong info given by Crucial. Once hp gives part number, hp number, google it to find diffrent brand.
G+_Ben Tyger
I'm not sure if the ML10 is a multi socket mobo, but you always have to have to have the same number and size chips in each bank for each filled socket in a multi socket system. G+_Dan Hockey
It has 4 ram slots all the same size.
G+_Dan Hockey
I just found the following.. amazon.com - Amazon.com: 16GB DDR4 SDRAM Memory Module: Electronics According to hp my setup will handle 4 of these for 64gb total.
G+_Ben Tyger
Dan Hockey? I'd see if the mobo supports unbuffered ECC memory. That RAM is only about 120% of desktop cost. Many servers are stacked with registered ECC which is a is about 200% - 300% of desktop cost. Some time it is at reduced maximum RAM potential. May make the cost numbers work for you better.
