I'm looking for a solution to notify employees when paper comes out of a printer that isn't easily seen, because it is tucked up underneath a staircase. I'm thinking of turning on an LED or buzzer that doesn't turn off until paper is removed. Suggestions on how to accomplish this consistently? (The paper comes out on the top of the printer. It is a Lexmark MS810n.) Thanks for your help.

White paper detection on a darker background? Sounds simple enough... Led light reflection back to a sensor. Arduino measures the change and triggers an alarm(or other).

I'm wondering if an ultrasonic sensor would work also?

My thoughts in experimental exercise... Tv remote and a simple light sensitive resistor.
